Not to be confused with Frankincense and Myhrr, these aren't gifts for the Christ king, these are weighty treasures you need to devalue to survive.
With so many worldly possessions clogging the arteries of your life it might be a good season to think about what is really necessary and cast the rest aside like so much flotsam and jetsam ~ lest you sink under the weight of it all. Listen for the Flotsam and Jetsam lines in the 2007 song from Blue October, "Into the Ocean".
Bring Christ back into Christmas, you know the birthday of Jesus and all ... and forget about the flyers, Black Friday, Cyber Monday and all the worldly possessions we want, need and gotta have ... and think about those that don't have. I think its time to "Get Back (Beatles)" to where you once belonged (You know JoJo left his home in Tucson, Arizona) ... but that's another blog post (about Tucson, stay tuned).
How to get there and lighten your load:
-
Go through your electronics that no longer are useful and donate to Goodwill
-
Go through your clothes, dresser, closet and towels and get them donated too
-
Clean out your fridge, condiments and that science project in tupperware (and limp crisper food)
-
Check out what major piece of furniture needs to be chucked in favor of a new rearrangement of your living space (think big, the bigger the item the more sq ft of living space you'll recover)
-
Give a goat for only $75 bucks ... to a needy family; these people need some of your jetsam (cash) to survive this org seems to give 87% to the programs for the needy, a remarkably lean organization
-
Go through your books and get the non-reference one's donated
-
Go through your finances and see what your overheads are and how you can budget for a vacation this year
-
Budget, too, for a personal day of massage or three in 2008 (jettison stress, several times 'lightens the load')
-
Go through your diet and see how many fruits and vegetables you embrace daily, and triple it (pay for the good stuff, its sweeter than candy and better for you)
-
Laugh, laugh, laugh ... with your kids, friends, co-workers ... lightening your heart will get the Flotsam and Jetsam of bad mood, ill will and worldly b.s. off your shoulders
And last but not least, get out and Vote so we can put this administration afloat (or the way I see the Bush administration, as Jetsam, we can sink it) in our minds and try and not remember the era of G.W. and hope that our new administration will allow us to float on(Modest Mouse) with a lighter spirit and a new direction for our American spirit and pride. God bless and have a lighter, safer New Year.
